What Makes a Great Writers Retreat?

July 14, 2015
Lovely view, fantastic friends, writers making waves...writer waves!

What makes a great writers retreat? Is it the setting? The faculty? The writers? It is all of these and, perhaps, the synchronicity that occurs when you are blessed with an idyllic setting coupled with faculty and writers who are lovely—fun, generous, honest about their writing and yours…. IMG_2902

The Texas Writers Retreat!

As I reflect on the five days last August that I was privileged to share with organizer and writer Paul Cuclis, writing guru Chuck Sambuchio, and one-of-a-kind agent, Elizabeth “Liz” Kracht, along with fellow writers who became my friends, I smile. The TWR was a stress-free paradise at Piney Creek Ranch. It was a creative incubator. It was AWESOME!

My five days in Texas were filled with informative presentations, quiet talks, ranch walks, canoe races, a plunge in the pond, pool lollie-gagging, and vino sipping with new friendsLiz, Matthew and Lindsey, Paul, Jenn, Marlene and Greg, Ed, Suanne, Marilyn, Chuck, Ann and Jay—all spectacular peeps!

Two important take-aways for you writers out there:

1) only send your best work to literary agents if you want a positive response, i.e., a polished draft that, preferably, has been reviewed by a reputable editor; and

2) start building your author platform now–it’s never too early!

I returned to Oklahoma City refreshed and ready to write. I also started building my author platform!
